Cannabis Decarboxylation Guide: Perfect Temperature & Time Chart

Quick Reference Chart

Cannabis decarboxylation temperature and time guide showing two methods: standard method at 240°F (115°C) for 30-40 minutes for quick activation and good potency, and low and slow method at 220°F (105°C) for 60 minutes for better terpene preservation. Includes important safety notes about using oven thermometer and temperature limits.
Complete decarboxylation temperature and time chart with standard and low & slow methods, plus essential safety tips for perfect THC activation.

Standard Method (Fastest)

  • 🌡️ Temperature: 240°F (115°C)
  • ⏱️ Time: 30-40 minutes
  • ✨ Result: Quick activation, good potency

Low & Slow (Best Flavor)

  • 🌡️ Temperature: 220°F (105°C)
  • ⏱️ Time: 60 minutes
  • ✨ Result: Better terpene preservation

Why Decarb Is Essential

Raw cannabis contains THCA (non-psychoactive) which must be converted to THC through heat. This process, called decarboxylation, is crucial for edibles, tinctures, and oils.

Before and after decarboxylation comparison showing raw cannabis with THCA non-psychoactive compound that cannot get you high versus decarboxylated cannabis with THC psychoactive compound ready for edibles. The transformation occurs through heat at 240°F (115°C).
Visual comparison of raw cannabis (THCA, non-psychoactive) versus decarboxylated cannabis (THC, psychoactive) after heating at 240°F (115°C). Decarboxylation converts THCA to THC through heat, making cannabis ready for edibles.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Preparation
    • Preheat oven to 240°F (115°C)
    • Line baking sheet with parchment paper
    • Break up cannabis into small, even pieces (not too fine)
  2. Temperature Verification
    • Use an oven thermometer (crucial - most ovens are inaccurate)
    • Adjust temperature if needed
    • Let oven fully preheat (15-20 minutes)
  3. Decarboxylation Process
    • Spread cannabis evenly on parchment
    • Place in middle rack
    • Set timer for 30-40 minutes
    • Stir gently at halfway point
  4. Completion & Storage
    • Cannabis should be light-medium brown, not dark or burnt
    • Let cool completely
    • Store in airtight container if not using immediately

Odor-Free Methods

Mason Jar Method

  1. Use oven-safe mason jar with tight lid
  2. Same temperature (240°F)
  3. Shake jar every 15 minutes
  4. Let cool completely before opening

Sous-Vide Method

  1. Seal in vacuum bag or zip-lock (water displacement method)
  2. 212°F (100°C) for 90 minutes
  3. No stirring needed
  4. Most precise temperature control

Special Cases

Concentrates (BHO, Shatter, etc.)

  • Lower time: 20-30 minutes at 240°F
  • Watch for bubbling to stop
  • Note: RSO and distillate usually pre-decarbed

Kief and Hash

  • Use parchment envelope to prevent sticking
  • 25-30 minutes at 240°F
  • Check frequently after 20 minutes

Pro Tips

  • ✓ Always verify temperature with oven thermometer
  • ✓ Don't grind too finely - prevents burning
  • ✓ Store in dark glass or opaque container
  • ✓ Use within 2 months for best potency
